Westorn (sic) L. Barrett, aged 77, formerly of Gomer Street, Jefferson Valley,
better known as "Wes" Barrett, died last Thursday evening June 14, 1956, at the
Williams Nursing Home in Poughkeepsie, following a long illness. His wife,
Lulu Holmes Barrett, died in 1940. Mr. Barrett was long active in the
Jefferson Valley section, where he was a farmer and best known as a cattle
dealer. He also at one time conducted a general store in Jefferson Valley.
Born in Kent Cliffs, on September 24, 1878, he was the son of Solomon and Sarah
Knox Barrett. He was a member of the Baptist church at Mahopac Falls and a
former member of the Junior Order of American Mechanics and the Mohegan fire
department. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Vina) Ahrens of
Furnace Wood Road, Peekskill; Mrs. Walter (Gladys) Clearwater of Shrub Oak;
Mrs. Randall (Ruth) Agor, of Gloversville, and Mrs. Benjamin (Luella) Brady of
Pawling; two sons, Arthur Barrett of Hillside Avenue, Peekskill, and Wallace
Barrett of Shrub Oak; 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral
services were held Sunday from the Shrub Oak Methodist church, with the Rev.
Dorland R. Russell, the pastor, and former pastor, the Rev. Kenneth Hoover, of
Pleasantville, officiating. Burial was made in the Ballard Barrett cemetery,
Mahopac Falls."

NIGHT; Jefferson Valley Woman Had Undergone Operation.
"Mrs. Lulu Barrett, (mother of Patrolman Wallace Barrett of Mahopac (LB:
incorrect)), died at 7:25 o'clock last night at the Peekskill Hospital. Death
was caused by a heart complication following an operation which she underwent
on Monday of this week.
"Mrs. Barrett had been in ill health for several weeks. Last week she had an
X-ray picture taken, and on Sunday she entered the Peekskill Hospital for an
operation, which was performed on Monday.
"Mrs. Barrett was well known in this section, having lived most of her life at
Jefferson Valley. Several of her children are residents of Peekskill. She was
born in Dykeman, N.Y., the daughter of Henry Holmes and Emma Smith Holmes.
Surviving are her father, Henry Holmes, of Carmel, N.Y.; her husband, Weston
Barrett, of Gomer Street, Jefferson Valley, who formerly conducted a store in
that community; four daughters, Mrs. Richard Ahrens, of Peekskill, Mrs. Walter
Clearwater, of Shrub Oak, Mrs. Randall Agor, of Salamanca, N.Y., and Mrs.
Benjamin Brady, of Wingdale, N.Y.; two sons, Arthur Barrett, of Peekskill, and
(Patrolman) Wallace Barrett (of Mahopac); five grandchildren; two brothers,
Chauncey and George Holmes, of Brewster; and two sisters, Mrs. Bernard Brewer,
of Brewster, and Mrs. Roy Ballard, of Patterson, N.Y.
"Mrs. Barrett was a member of the Shrub Oak M. E. Church, where she was an
active member of the Ladies Aid Society.
"The funeral will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, at 2 P.M., at the Shrub Oak
M. E. Church, with the pastor, Rev. Kenneth Hoover, officiating. Interment
will be made in the Baptist Church Cemetery at Mahopac Falls, N.Y."

Arthur Holmes Barrett, a former Peekskill resident, died Wednesday at Kent
General Hospital in Delaware. He was 89.
Mr. Barrett worked for Interstate Auto Parts for many years, selling
automobile parts to garages in northern Westchester and Putnam counties. He
later worked in sales for several car dealerships, including Fisher Bros.
Chevrolet in Mahopac.
He enjoyed a variety of activities, including fishing, hunting, speed
skating, skiing, golfing and oil painting, his family said.
He was born Dec. 11, 1905, to Westron and Lulu Holmes Barrett in Jefferson
Valley.
He spent most of his life in Peekskill until 1985, when he moved to
Dover, Del.
On Jan. 26, 1926, he and Lottie Julia Smith were married in Ossining.
Mr. Barrett is survived by a daughter, Alaine Barrett Baines of Mississauga,
Ontario, Canada; a sister, Gladys Clearwater of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; eight
grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
His wife died in 1992. A son, Lowell Arthur, died in February, and a
grandson, Terrence T. Barrett, died in 1983.
Torbert Funeral Chapel of Dover is handling the arrangements.
Family and friends are making memorial contributions to the Delaware Hospice,
Central Division, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, Del. 19901.

Note: ! Lowell Arthur Barrett graduated from Peekskill High School in 1948. He
received his BS in History and Government in 1952 from St. Lawrence University
in Canton, NY, where he enjoyed music and ski jumping.
In November 1952 he enlisted in the Air Force. He obtained his basic
training and joined the Aviation Cadets and graduated in March 1954 as a pilot
and 2nd Lieutenant. He was in the Strategic Air Command for 10 years flying
B-36s and B-52s out of Carswell AFB, Texas. Besides flying, one of his duties
was to live in the shadow of the bombers for a week at a time on alert status,
and during the Cuban Missile Crises, for several weeks he flew 24-hour missions
out of Carswell against the Russian border.
In June 1964, he transferred to Dover AFB, where he flew C-133s for six years
to Southeast Asia. In 1968, for one year, he was Commander of the Rescue
Operation in Thailand that brought 223 downed airmen home, coordinating rescues
in North Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, after which he returned to Dover and the
C-133. In 1970, he went into the new C-5As at Dover, but was transferred a few
months later to the 20th Military Airlift Command as Squadron Commander, which
meant retraining in the C-141. He retired in June 1973 as Lt. Colonel,
remaining within sight and sound of his beloved aircraft.
In 1974, he became head of DelTech's pre-discharge education program at the
base, and then served as an instructor in the Human Services Department. During
this time, he also earned his master's degree in education counseling from
Southern Illinois University.
Around 1980, DelTech asked him to create and chair the Aeronautical Science
Department, where he served until his retirement in June 1991. During that
time, he coached the DelTech Flight Team, which competed each year in the
Regional Intercollegiate Flying Competition. Six out of eight years, the team
earned the right to represent the Northeast Region in national competitions. In
1987, he was named national coach of the year by the national group.
Lowell Barrett was Bishop of the Dover Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints from 1979-1982. He was involved in the Boy Scouts program,
where he was a Woodbadge Scouter. For the last several years, he enjoyed
serving in the Stake High Council advising the Rising Sun Maryland Branch, the
Single Adult Program and the Primary Program for children under 12(1).
