Tompkins, Fannie Beyea (b. 27 FEB 1904, d. 4 JUN 1978)
Note: !Putnam County Republican 3/19/1904: "Mr. & Mrs. Briggs Tompkins of Somers
Centre recently welcomed the 13th child, a dau. into their family. 10 boys and
3 girls have been born to them and all are living but one girl. Parents who
have added 10 prospective voters to the population should be honored with a
medal. Pres. Roosevelt (Teddy - LB) should have the matter brought to his
attention."
From daughter Lu Christie Nov. 1993: "Dad was probably the champion fan of
this family tree you've been researching - at least of one fine leaf. He
adored our mother; was almost in awe of her. They were sweethearts for 54
years. Mom loved to tell about their chance meeting with a mailman they hadn't
seen for 30 years. He immediately came up to them and called HER by name.
When she asked how he recognized her after so long, he said, "Oh, I could never
forget those blue eyes!" My father was NOT AMUSED! (She WAS pretty.) My
mother taught school from 1922-1924 in Farmers Mills, NY. It was a one-room
schoolhouse, and several of the boys were older than she. (They only came to
school winters, when there wasn't much work on the farm.) Dad went to visit
Mom at the Tompkins homestead at some point in their courtship, and my aunts
told me that my mother wouldn't go to the outhouse for SOME TIME after "HE" had
used it. Smart woman!! (Check the birthdate of Charlotte and the marriage
date of Hobert & Fannie!!) Back to the courtship of Fannie & Hobert: one more
silly tale from Mom. It seems that her mother sent them to the store. One of
the items they were to bring back was a jar of olives. Of course, they were in
a horse and buggy. They began to discuss olives on the long ride home, and no
one remembered who suggested the "have just one" (I'm sure it was Fannie - she
adored the man!), but when they got home, the olive jar was empty. I have a
vague recollection of "my cousin Wes" (that's Mom talking). I see a very old
(50+, right?!) man who looked a lot like my oldest uncles. I believe he might
have come to our house in Clintondale. At any rate, I know my mother spoke of
him. He must have been a special cousin, for I feel that I know him."
Death: 4 JUN 1978 Middletown, Middlesex, CT
Burial: 6 JUN 1978 Lloyd, Ulster, NY

Smalley, Hobert Carlton (b. 15 FEB 1897, d. 27 MAY 1978)
Note: !son of Robert D. Smalley and wife Mariette, according to daughter-in-law.
1910 Census with parents Robert D. Smalley age 55 and Marietta age 54, Burton
25, Lulu A., 23, and Gertrude 15. Hobart was 13.
From Daughter, Lu Smalley Christie 1993: "The 1910 Census was especially
poignant. Sometime that year, at age 13, Hobert left school to take over the
family farm. Brother Burt was in a wheelchair where he had been since 12 years
of age (probably juvenile rheumatoid; they simply called it "arthritis").
There was an even older son, Chester, who had left home to seek his fortune (or
something). Inspired by his eldest son, Robert, my grandfather, also took a
powder. Hence, my father's early entry into adulthood, his special kindness to
single mothers throughout his life, his total abstinence from alcohol until age
25 ("saw enough of it when I was a kid"),and his sense of social responsibility.
(Justice of the Peace, Town Board, School Board, Fire Commission etc. etc.) He
also became a really fine maker of wines - and brandies, when the sugar was
overdone a bit. Genes will "out"!! Mom and Dad met at a "social", and they
danced to "Skip to my Lu". (In honor of the event, I have dropped the "la Mae"
from my name, and added Christie!) Mom and Dad died 8 days apart. We did
Tuesday funerals two weeks in a row. Evelyn's oldest brother Lloyd ("Briggs")
said it all, "This must have been a hell-of-a-long week for Uncle Hobert."
Death: 27 MAY 1978 East Hampton, Middlesex, CT
Burial: 30 MAY 1978 Lloyd, Ulster, NY

Smalley, Hobert Carlton (b. 23 APR 1926, d. 18 APR 1932)
Note: !From niece Lu Smalley Christie 1993: "I was most interested in the date of my
brother Hobert's death. I knew that he was born in April, but I never knew
that he had died then, too. I only knew that I thought he must have died in
the spring. I remember asking my mother what the sound of the 'peepers' was.
She explained about the little frogs - then got a sad look on her face and
said, "I don't like the sound of them." Kids know things, don't they! (Their
first great grandchild, Jacqueline, was born on Hobert's birthday 4/23."
Death: 18 APR 1932 Clintondale, Ulster, NY

Smalley, Lulu Mae (b. --Not Shown--)
Note: !1993 correspondence: "I was named for my oldest paternal (lulu) and maternal
(Ida Mae) aunts. I was always "Lu", however, and I discovered my full name
when I started school (grade 1) at age 5 (1941 - not the greatest year). I was
quite shocked, as I recall! Mom and Dad met at a "social", and they danced to
"Skip to my Lu". (In honor of the event, I have dropped the "la Mae" from my
name - and added Christie!). Ross and I are enjoying early retirements. We
are incredibly busy and have to force ourselves to "take time off", but then,
Type A's don't go away on command, do they??"
From putlication of U. of Vermont, May 1993, under "RETIRING FACULTY":
