Putnam Courier records death as 29 Feb 1935. This is an invalid date.
Printed in this issue is a picture taken about thirty-five years ago, of a
log house, the walls of which are still standing in the woods at the southern
end of Barrett pond on the Carmel Country Club lands. I think few realize that
there still exists in our county a trace of such a primitive relic of the past.
In the picture, sitting before the house, are Mrs. Edward Barrett and in the
doorway, Mrs. Tillott Barrett, her sister-in-law; beside Mrs. Edward Barrett is
her son, Vernon, next to him is her brother, Tillott, and, standing, their
brother, Lewis Edgar Barrett; the two latter were born in this house; all are
living, some quite young yet.
The log house and the lands about it were once owned by their father, Peter,
who built the house, having bought the land from his brother-in-law, one of the
numerous John Barretts.
The group in the picture are members of the large family descended from the
first settlers, with representation in every part of this and adjoining
counties, most bearing the name Barrett but many of direct descent through the
female line with other names.
Within a mile or so of the ruins of this log house, in the towns of Carmel
and Kent, settled, lived, died and were buried many of the first of the main
branch of the family.
Four stone walls enclose ground, about a hundred yards square, which rises
from the road in one steep slope. Several tall trees are rooted in this bank,
their straight, erect trunks forming a triangle with the sloping earth, and the
absence of lower limbs allow each evening's sun, as it sinks behind the opposite
hill, to light a weird scene beneath on this westward facing terrace, like seats
in an ampitheatre are set the white tombstones of the old Barrett graveyard.
All day, when the sun is in the east and south, one scarcely sees or notices
this silent theatre of the dead, but with the setting of the sun it seems to
spring into view as if the footlights were turned on, and, as after a brief
space, the old Barrett hill hides the receding rays there seems to come a
murmur from the graves: "We wait; We wait, O Sun, until we, not you, shall
rise!"
Most of the tenants of the graves died in old age. One, John, was born in
1741 and was buried in 1817; Marcus, born in 1749, and engraved on his tombstone
erected in 1825 we find these lugubrious lines:
"This dark abode proclaims the
truth To bending age and blooming youth;
You must your active limbs resign
And be a mouldering corpse like mine."
Isaac, the revolutionary soldier born in 1752, died in 1821, but I could not
find his wife, Jemima's, grave. They had five children; their son, John, and his
wife, Sarah Drew who lived "102 years, 7 months and 5 days," are here buried.
The latter had twelve children, and their son, Allen, who married also a Sarah
Drew, daughter of James Drew, came into possession of the old homestead of which
the burying ground was a part; and his heirs sold it to John Parker who sold it
to the present owner.
A daughter, Jemima, another of John and Sarah's twelve children, married
Samuel Barrett and they (both buried here) were the parents of the late Henry
Barrett, who died in 1936 at Mahopac Falls at the age of 96 years.
There are only a few stones with names of other than Barrett on them. One in
the northeast corner is over the grave of Colonel David Hitchcock, after whom
Prospect hill is often mentioned as Hitchcock hill, for he once owned the farm
which included it, now owned by Royal C. Barrett.
On the Colonel's tomb is inscribed:
"Grant us of quickening grace
To fit our souls to fly
Then when we drop this flesh
We'll rise above the sky."
The oldest marker found, with inscription that could be read, is a natural
flat field stone erected to "Abigail, wife of John Russell, died 1798."
There seem to have been countless Barretts, all more or less distantly re-
lated.
One, Gideon, who died in 1820 at the age of 48 years, as his tombstone
records, had long been in possession of the land west of the homestead farm and
including Barrett hill proper as it is shown on the old county map of 1854.
Gideon left this farm to his wife, Hannah, for her life or until she should
remarry when it was to go to Vincent, his nephew. Hannah married, for the nephew
was in possession at an early date, and her tombstone has this unusual record:
"Hannah Barrett, widow of Gideon and wife of Bennoni Barrett;" she lived to be
84 years of age and died in 1861, the same year that Vincent died and his
youngest son, Edward, was born. Edward bought his brother's and sister's
interests and sold the farm now called "Far-Flung Farm" to the present owner.
Edward had a brother, Orlando V. Barrett, a kindly old bachelor, who was born
and lived all his life of 80 years, or until Edward sold the farm in 1927, in
the old house on "Far-Flung."
Before the door of that house and towering above its roof pole is a majestic
hemlock, 9 feet in circumference at the base, the only tree of its kind for many
a mile.
Orlando told me, that when a boy, he climbed to the top of this tree when it
was so small that his father made him come down as he was afraid it would break
off. "It's at least as old as I am," he said.
The last earth that was upturned in the old graveyard has lain above Orlando
for two years now, and when they came to bury him I thought "not sweet and
quickly fading flowers that tell of sorrow, the poignant grief of friends that
group about this bier, but something that was attune to this life's long span,
should deck this mound of his familiar earth;" so in his grave I placed a simple
branch of this old tree that with his youth commenced and whose green boughs
through life had marked his home and now waved as passed his funeral train.
