Elisha J. Cole of Kent Township petitioned Surrogate Court (Jeremiah Hine-
Surrogate) of Putnam County 20 Jan 1829 to be named Administrator of Isaac's
estate, stating that administration should be granted "to some discreet person."
He said no will existed, and he named the children listed in this family record
as the only next of kin, testifying they all lived in Putnam County. He further
showed that all the goods, chattels and credits of the deceased did not exceed
in value the sum of $100. The court granted his petition, whereupon he
determined the estate was insufficient to pay the debts. He requested authority
to sell real estate in the amount necessary to pay the debts.

! William Barrett made an application for a U.S. government pension on 11 Sep
1832 at which time he was 80 years of age and residing at Kent NY. His pension
was allowed for six months and twenty-two days' actual service as a private in
the New York troops, Revolutionary War. He enlisted at Fredericksburgh NY and
served under Capt. Develan and Col. VanCourtland(1).

Note: !We are indepted to Louanne Barrett, who has provided all notes for this Isaac
and his descendants. She has seriously researched to untangle these very
complex, early, Isaac Barretts of Putnam, and to determine their connection to
Westchester County. Louanne does not show this Isaac as a son of James
([1722]-1802) because she has found no proof of this connection.

NOTES for Isaac:
Deed of Sale, 13 Jun 1782 (County Recorder, Dutchess County, NY), sold to Isaac
Barrett by the Commissioners of Forfeiture for the Middle District (John
Hathorn, Samuel Dodge, Daniel Graham) 121 acres of loyalist Morris land in
Fredericksburgh Precinct in Dutchess Co., NY, bordering Minthorn (or China)
Pond, Cole's (or Barrett) Pond, and Croton River. Since Cole's Pond is referred
to in some contemporary deeds as Barrett Pond, it is likely that Isaac already
lived there, as a tenant or squatter. This transaction establishes him as a
Revolutionary Patriot, and at least one Isaac Barrett did serve in the military,
but there is no proof of our Isaac's Revolutionary service. His death before
pensions were authorized makes it impossible to establish.
p. 197 of ?: "Samuel Dodge and John Hathorn, Esq., Commissioners of Forfeitures
for the Middle District appointed in pursuance of an act of the legislature of
the said state entitled 'An Act for the Forfeiture and sale of the estates of
persons who have adhered to the enemies of this state and for declaring the
Sovereignty of the People of this State in respect to all property within the
same'."
Quoting an undated sheet about 1900, source unknown: "Just fifty miles north of
New York City lies the beautiful Lake Mahopac. Once this lake and 40,000 acres
of land surrounding it was owned by Mary Philipse, the woman George Washington
is said to have wooed. She did not marry Washington, but gave her hand to a
gallant officer, Col. Roger Morris, who fought side by side with Washington at
the defeat of Braddock, but when the Revolution began he went loyally to the
side of the King with Mary, who was a Tory."
Adjacent 160 acres to the west of Isaac's land, also bordering both Barrett and
China Ponds, in the possession of James Barrett, was sold 20 June 1783 to David
Frost. The assumption is that James is Isaac's brother, and a Loyalist. However,
in 1790, James still lives next door, perhaps renting. David Frost is enumerated
15 names away from Isaac Barret. Jr.

1790 U.S. Census, Frederickstown Twsp, Dutchess Co., NY: p. 84, printed version.
Isaac Barrett (call-"Isaac Barret Jr.") is the only male 16 and upwards, three
males under 16 (probably Isaac, John and Hugh), three females (wife Sarah,
daughters Debery and Sarah). He lives between Daniel Cole and James Barrett,
then James Barrett, Jr. (Jemima is already married, Peter and Samuel are grown
and probably on their own. A nearby Samuel in Frederickstown in 1790 has one
male over 16, two females. Peter is not listed).
1800 U.S. Census, Frederick Twsp, Dutchess Co., NY. 1 male 10-16 (Hugh); 1 male
45 & up (Peter); 1 female 10-16 (Debery); 1 female 45 & up (wife Sarah). Where
is youngest daughter Sarah, who would have been eight?
WILL: Vol. V, p. 400. will dated 30 Jun 1809. Wife Sarah (1/3 of estate as long
as she remains widow), sons Peter (at Sarah's death, to receive her part),
Samuel, Isaac, John, Hue; deceased daughter myne, daughters debery Barrett and
Sarah Ruseche to divide two-thirds of the moveables, also Sarah Whitney (5
shillings), John Wixom, Jr. (5 shillings), Isaac Wixom (five shillings),
Elizabeth Carragan (5 shillings), and to Anny (5 shillings) and James Wixom, (5
shillings).executors Daniel Cole, Peter Barrett and Samuel Barrett. Two-thirds
of land to be divided between sons Samuel, Peter, Isaac, John and Hue. Of that
land, Samuel and Peter and Isaac to have three quarters of it, and the other
quarter to be divided equal between John and Hue. Witnesses Daniel Cole, Lewis
Evans and Phebe Evans. Isaac Barrett signed with a mark. So did Phebe Evans.
Will proved 18 Oct. 1809, Daniel Cole and Peter Barrett executors, Dutchess
County, NY.
.
On 9 Jul 1996 Louanne interestingly writes the following:
Current theory: Three brothers, Isaac, b. probably in Bedford [1740], James and
William, b. 1752 in Bedford, (sons of James?) move to Dutchess County enough in
advance of the Revolution to be tenants on Roger Morris land and name Barrett
Pond. This explains the lack of deeds; they rented. Their Uncle(?) Isaac
Barrett, b. 1735 in Bedford, moves to Barrett Hill around the same time and
names that, in Frederickstown 1790 (1-3-4). I estimated OUR Isaac's birth
around 1740 because of the birthdate of oldest child Jemima "Myne" in 1764, but
he could have been born up to five years later increasing the gap in age between
the two Isaacs. Of course, in large families, babies are born near, sometimes
before, their own uncles and aunts.
.
Also, extracting from Boo and Bob's Descendants of Samuel Barrett, and from Rev.
War pension applications, we find a mass Barrett exodus to Dutchess: "Uncle
Isaac's" brother John b. [1722] in Bedford, sold Bedford land in 1756 and 1770,
was on Philipse Patent of 1777 tax list, Frederickstown in 1790 (2-3-4), d. 1802
in Carmel, and his sons:
John b. 1741 in Bedford, Frederickstown in 1790 (1-1-1), d. 1817, sold Bedford
land in 1770, bur. Barrett Hill Cem.; and
Justus b. [1745] in Bedford, on Philipse Patent of 1777 tax list, d. in Carmel.
Probability that this Carmel-area group arrived with "Uncle Isaac" between 1770
and 1777.
.
Abraham, Bethuel and Samuel Barrett enlisted from Bedford and stayed there; have
pension applications also.
.
Another group, children of Samuel Barrett and Mary Moseman;
Marcus b. 1749 Bedford, still in Bedford in 1790, d. 1825, bur Barrett Hill Cem;
Jesse b. Bedford, in Fredrickstown 1790 (2-3-4) d. 1838 Carmel;
Reuben b. 1762 Bedford, Rev. War enlisted from Westchester Co., m. Elizabeth
Knowlton 2 Dec. 1784 in Bedford, Frederickstown 1790 (1-1-3), d. 4 Aug. 1830
Kent;
Jemima Barrett b. Bedford, m. Henry Light, moved to Putnam in 1774, lived next
door to her Uncle John Barrett [1722)-1802
.
John, Samuel, James & "Uncle" Isaac Barrett were all sons of Samuel [1707]-1759
and Jemima (Holmes) BARRETT.
.
SO WHAT? Well, what is that I am less inclined than I was to believe that
BARRETTs were in Dutchess Co. for considerable time prior to the Revolution.
I had assumed that it would take a few generations to produce so many
contemporaries, but Boo and Bob make it clear that they bred quietly in Bedford,
moved, probably not all at the same time, then went beserk in Dutchess/Kent.
That is more likely than a coincidental invasion of BARRETTs from CT, MA,
Albany or elsewhere.
