Bernice Heady Gottwald: "After mother's divorce from my father, George, some
of the family were most disapproving, and one was Thelma Tompkins, wife of
Lester. At a chance meeting, Mother greeted Thelma, "Hello, Thelma, how are
you?" This met with a stony silence from the lady, at which Mother commented,
"Not so good, I guess". Mother had a rip of a sense of humor and I am told by
those who knew us both, that I'm surely Mother's girl. I am. Lester was
always cordial and visited Mother at the Bipsy Trail Club where she had gone to
work as Housekeeper after the divorce, earning her daily bread. She received
$10 a week alimony from George, which nearly killed him. She threw her 18K
gold wedding band into a river out in Reno, Nevada. I'm too much like my
father in the respect that I have a healthy regard for money. I'd have pawned
it!"
