Barrett, Edward Percy (b. 25 JUN 1875, d. 31 DEC 1964)
Note: !Edward Percy Barrett was educated at Cantatoe School and Old Katonah School.
He studied law at New York Law School and was admitted to the Bar in June 1900.
He practiced law in White Plains with his uncle William Henry Robertson and
brothers. He opened his own law office in Katonah. He was Supervisor of the
Town of Bedford from 1905-1917 and again from 1920-1954, a total of 46 years.
He was a Presbyterian, Republican (head of the North County Party for many
years) and loved farming. He and wife Estelle Travis resided at Oak Hill in
Katonah, NY.
.
From SUPERVISORS OF THE TOWN OF BEDFORD, 1994:
E. P. Barrett was born at Cantatoe on June 25, 1875, to Joseph and Emma
Robertson Barrett. Educated in Katonah's public schools and at New York Law
School, he served his law clerkship in the firm of Barrett and Buckbee in White
Plains, then joined the firm of Close and Robertson in 1897. He was admitted to
the bar in 1900. On November 27, 1901, Barrett married Estelle A. Travis and
built a new home at 27 Bedford Road in Katonah. In 1907, the Barretts built a
new home at 51 Bedford Road. Barrett remained with his uncle's law firm in
White Plains until 1916, when he opened his own office in Katonah. A power in
the local Republican party, E. P. Barrett served as Republican town committee
chairman for many years.
Both as a businessman and as a community activist, Barrett was an important
figure in new Katonah's early development. He was a partner in a number of
small business enterprises in town, including the Katonah Lighting Company,
which first brought electricity to new Katonah. Barrett served on the Building
Committee of the Katonah Village Library and was instrumental in the
establishment of the Katonah Memorial Park Association. He was a member of the
Katonah Presbyterian Church. Throughout this time Barrett maintained an
interest in the farm life to which he had been born in Cantatoe by cultivating
a farm on Cherry Street.
Barrett was first elected supervisor in 1905, winning by a narrow margin over
the Democratic incumbent, Isaac Turner. When he took office in late November of
that year, he carried on a family tradition. His grandfather, Henry Robertson;
father, Joseph Barrett; and uncle, William Robertson, had all preceded him as
supervisor. During his first period in office, Barrett oversaw the
establishment of the Bedford Police Department, which was founded on June 7,
1909, in response to a petition from thirty-eight concerned residents.
Having served six terms, Barrett chose not to run for supervisor in 1917.
Public life continued to call, however. In 1920, Barrett became justice of the
peace, thus regaining his seat on the Town Board. In Novenber 1921, he was
again elected supervisor and took office the following January. From then on he
held office continuously until his retirement in 1953. In all, E. P. Barrett
served an unprecidented and unequaled forty-four years as supervisor of the Town
of Bedford. He died on December 31, 1964.

(Katonah), NY. Burial plot 184.
.
From SUPERVISORS OF THE TOWN OF BEDFORD, 1994:
Douglas Langley Barrett was born on December 3, 1902, to Edward P. and
Estelle A. Travis Barrett at their home at 27 Bedford Road in Katonah. He was
the oldest of four children, only two of whom survived infancy. His sister,
Katharine Barrett Kelly, today holds the office of Town Historian of Bedford.
Barrett married Margaret Fowler of Mt. Kisco on February 18, 1933. They had one
daughter, Margot.
Douglas Barrett recieved his early education in the Katonah public schools.
After studying at Blair Academy and Union College, he made his career in
engineering. Barrett went to work for the Westchester County Department of
Public Works in 1923, becoming an assistant civil engineer in 1935; in the late
thirties he worked for the New York City Board of Water Supply as an engineering
inspector on the Deleware Aquaduct. Beginning in 1942, he represented the
County in the early development of Westchester County Airport. From 1929 on, he
also maintained a partnership in an engineering firm in Katonah, Leonard
Associates, which later became Barrett and Bunney.
Like most members of his family, Barrett was a member of the Republican
party. When he was elected Bedford supervisor in 1953 to succeed his father, he
became the fifth member of the Robertson-Barrett family to hold that office.
Indeed, at the time of his first election, there was some objection in town to
the continuation of what was termed the "Barrett dynasty." Nevertheless, he
proved to be a popular supervisor, whose quiet demeanor was often contrasted to
his father's more openly political style. The first supervisor to treat the
office as a fulltime position, Barrett went on to win five consecutive
elections. His engineering background served him well in office: under his
leadership, Bedford adopted its first long range comprehensive zoning plan, and
also set up the first water storage and distribution district in New York State.
Douglas Barrett was still supervisor of Bedford when he died while on
vacation in Sea Island, Georgia on May 22, 1963.
