Note: !Joseph Barrett was born on Broad Brook Road. He attended Bedford Academy and
graduated from Lafayette College, Easton, PA in 1861, a member of Delta Kappa
Epsilon fraternity. He was a farmer and School Commissioner when he married
Emma Robertson. Joseph was interested in politics and when Moses W. Fisk did
not run for Supervisor of the Town of Bedford in 1879, Joseph did, and was
elected. He was Supervisor until 1885. He became cashier of the New York City
Custom House in 1885, to which he was appointed by William H. Robertson. This
meant a daily trip to the City. Trains had arrived in Northern Westchester
County in 1847, soon after Joseph and Emma were born. Joseph was president of
the Katonah Improvement Society. He was a member of the Bedford Farmers Club,
which was organized in March 1852, and he was it's Secretary from 1867-1881.
He was Treasurer of the State Reformatory for Women at Bedford. He was a
Presbyterian and a Republican. In 1883-1884 he wrote chapters for "Town of
Bedford and Town of New Castle and North Castle" for J. Thomas Scharf's
1885-1886 two volume "History of Westchester County, N.Y." At the age of 50,
commuting to the City and farming became more and more difficult, and since
the boys were older and in school, in 1889 they sold the Robertson Homestead
and bought the Moses Smith Deer Park farm in Katonah of 45 acres for $4560.
A beautiful old house, it was taken away from them in 1895 by New York City to
be used as the home for the City Engineer. The Katonah firemen burned it to
the ground when Route 35 was widened at old Route 22 and Route 35. Life in the
Deer Park Farm was busy, with more community affairs -- music, church, and
learning. From here the two younger boys walked to the Palmer Avenue School,
and when that burned in 1894, the Silkmill. Rob must have gone to the new
North Street School, the first building in New Katonah. Joseph Barrett was
President of the Katonah Village Improvemant Society, interested in the Choral
Club, and Treasurer of the Reformatory for Women in Bedford. He was Rev.
Joseph H. Eastman's right and sometimes left hand in the management of the
Katonah Presbyterian Church as Trustee, Treasurer, Superintendent of the Sunday
School, and Elder for 31 years. All were interested in the New Village -- the
parks, roads, fire department, new stores and homes. Joseph bought a lot next
to the Presbyterian Church and built their new home in 1898. Marty Griffin
says he remembers Joseph well. He used to have peppermints in his pockets for
his grandchildren. He loved to have his hair and beard combed. And on
Thanksgiving Day, the whole family assembled at his home on Edgemont Road. He
became Receiving Teller in the Cashier's Officer and resigned in 1905. Still
Treasurer of the Reformatory until his death, he joined his sons in local real
estate, developing Robertson Heights on the east, and Cottage Place, Valley and
Glen Roads on the west of the tracks. His health began to fail and
hemorrhaging took its toll. In hopes that a change would help, Joseph, Emma
and Elizabeth went to Atlantic City, where he died at 2 p.m. on Sunday, 13
March 1910. Joseph was a tall, thin man, kind, but stern.

Note: !Emma Robertson(4) was born in the Robertson Homestead on Cantatoe Road, the
youngest of 5 children. She attended the local Cantatoe School. Also when
young girls, Emma and her sister Marietta were given additional lessons from a
male French teacher, who boarded with them. They attended school in New York
City boarding with uncle Sherwood's family. On Emma's 18th birthday in 1859,
her brother William gave her an alarm clock, the first in the household. Emma
received her license to teach from School Commissioner James W. Husted and
taught in the Mt. Holly School on North Salem Road, a Bedford District. This
school building existed until the 1960s. Emma was a beautiful, tall, slim girl
with brown hair and gray-brown eyes. The Robertsons provided their own
household with meat, vegetables, milk, candles, soap and wove their own
clothing and sheets from home-grown flax. It was an early-to-bed and early-
to-rise living. She and Joseph Barrett were married by Rev. Richard Harris.
After Joseph died in 1910 Emma, Elizabeth, and Rob were living at home.
After Rob's marriage in 1913 and the death of Anna, Harry's wife, in February
1914, Emma found herself with grandchildren Henry 13, Emily 11, Jack and Jill
8, and Dorothy 5. Katonah was their home until after December 1925 when Harry
remarried. Emma, at 72 plus, started again to shape children into adults. In
Katonah at this time was her son Will and his 6, son E. Percy and his 2. Rob
was in Yonkers with one. To grandma were born 19 grandchildren; 3 died young
and as of Dec 1974 there were 10. Emma may not have been a politician, but she
contributed to the Grand Old Party four civic-minded sons. She last voted,
from a wheelchair, for Herbert Hoover at the age of 91 in November 1932. She
She died on Edgemont Road, aged 92.

Note: !Elizabeth Nexsen Barrett, Aunt Libbie, was born on the Robertson Cantatoe Road
homestead. She attended the Cantatoe school and Blair Academy in Blairstown,
NJ. She never married, and if she had lived in our time, she would have been
Governor of New York State. She had a keen, brilliant mind. A loveable and
remarkable person, her life was people, whether her family, neighbor or one in
a foreign land. She did not nag or preach -- it was her warm personality. She
was always ready to one in need, ill, or just a newcomer to our village. She
was there, first with a homemade cookie or an encouraging word. She worked for
the Presbyterian Church, Katonah V.I.S., Westchester Bible Society, Missionary
Society, District Nurse, anyone who needed help but not for public notice. She
died at Brookside Nursing Home in South Salem on Monday, her 91st birthday, 17
November 1958. A Bible Scholars Memorial was set up in her name at the Katonah
Library.
