DIED - South Salem - On Friday evening, Dec. 12th, Mr. Minthorn T. Barrett,
aged 48 yrs. and two months. Mr. Barrett had been in poor health for a good
while, but it was not until Friday, Dec. 5th, just a week before he died, that
he gave up work, to resume it no more. Drs. Lowe and Mansfield, of Ridgefield,
were the attending physicians, but their united skill was powerless to save
him. There was little or no hope from the first he sank gradually from day to
day until about seven o'clock on Friday evening, when the end came. The case
had not only baffled the skill of the two best physicians in this vicinity, but
they were unable to determine satisfactorily, in their own minds, the nature of
the desease which had caused death. At the request of these medical gentlemen
- Mrs. Barrett consented to allow an autopsy. The result was startling!
Nearly every vital organ in the body was found to be almost wholly and
incurably diseased. Stomach, kidneys, liver, and lungs, were each and all so
much affected and it seemed impossible that he could have lived so long. It is
hardly possible to account for such a complication of diseases. The funeral
took place on Monday last, at one o'clock at his late residence. There was
such a large gathering, for "Min" had many friends. The services were
conducted by Rev. Dr. Ely of Ridgefield, a member of the Pilgrim Lodge, of F. &
A. M. to which Mr. Barrett also belonged; and Rev. Mr. Jewell, pastor of the
Presbyterian church, in this place. A delegation of the Fraternity acted as
pall bearers. Two very beautiful and costly floral pieces, composed of
carnations, roses, and callas, the gift of the Brotherhood lay upon the casket.
As Mrs. Barrett was undecided whether she will have the interment of her
husband at Somers, where his parents are buried, or in the village cemetery
here, the remains were taken to Ridgefield and placed in a receiving vault to
remain through the winter.
