DINGEE b. 14 AUG 1816 probably Bedford. d. 19 NOV 1894 Ossining.
.
Sylvester moved to Bedford "at an early age" and married there. The McNeal
children were all born in Bedford. Town records indicate he was assessed for
highways between 1836-1841 for property owned in five districts: Cantitoe
Street (Route 22) to Beaver Dam River, Clinton Road, the Hook Road to Beaver
Dam River: Harris Road from Babbitt Road to Cherry Street, Cherry Street to
Croton Lake Road; Meeting House Road; and Cherry Street from Croton Lake Road
to town line. In about 1856 the family moved to Ossining (then the village of
Sing Sing) for Sylvester to take an official position at Sing Sing Prison which
he held for a number of years. They resided on State Street. He was a Trustee of
the village for 6 years. The death register of the town lists his occupation as
Carpenter. Though it does not name his parents, it lists as his father's
birthplace as Edinburgh, Scotland and his mother's as Berdford NY.
.
According to his obituary, "He was a man of strong good sense and judgment and
of the strictest personal integrity."
.
Another obituary states that he was "honest, straightforward in all his
dealings; of that happy disposition that makes and keeps friends without
apparent effort. Mr. McNeal was a man well liked while his sturdy independence
of character and plainess of speech won for him that respect without which mere
popularity is nothing. A sincere patriot, having the best interests of his
country at heart, Mr. McNeal has always been an active unflinching Republican,
ever true to the principles and doctrines of the party. In his death this
village loses a good citizen, and his family a kind father, husband, advisor,
and protector. He was interred with Masonic honors in Dale Cemetery. Member of
Westchester Lodge No. 189 F. and A.M. Lodge members turned out in full force to
pay respects" (1).
