Barrett, George (b. 1840, d. 15 MAY 1916)
Note: !George Barrett lived in New York, Wisconsin, and Kansas.
He murdered his brother Oliver on 29 March 1868. The 1889 History of Rock
County does not mention George.
HORRIBLE MURDER!
-------------
A MAN STABS HIS OWN BROTHER
THROUGH THE HEART WITH
A BUTCHER KNIFE!!
-----------
One of those horrible tradgedies which makes the blood chill in our veins
transpired yesterday afternoon at Magnolia in this county. Two brothers by the
name of George and Oliver Barrett got into an altercation, when George
deliberately stabbed his brother through the heart with a butcher knife. The
wounded man staggered off a couple of rods and dropped dead.
It appears that the brothers - who are men of families - lived in the same
house, and on Saturday their wives had some difficulty of rather a serious
nature. At the time of the tradegy George went up to his brother who was
nailing some slate over a cellar window to keep the cats out, and asked him if
he intended to allow his wife to abuse his wife (George's). To this Oliver
replied that he did mean to have her defend herself. Upon this George rejoined
that he would settle it, or something to that effect, and immediately plunged
the knife into him.
Another story is that George claims that his brother had an axe which he
intended to stike him with.
The murderer did not make any attempt to escape and was soon after taken into
custody. Both men are between 30 and 40 years of age, and their reputation for
peacefulness of disposition does not rank first rate.
The Sheriff, District Attorney and Coroner went to Magnolia this morning, but
up to the time to press had not returned.
