Barrett, Frederick (b. 15 OCT 1829, d. ?)
Note: ! Frederick Barrett moved with his family from Dutchess County to Tioga
County, NY in 1834, where his education was begun in the public schools.
Residing in that county until 1845, the family moved to Rock County, WI. Fred
was numbered among the honored pioneers of Rock County, dating his residence
from 1844, and was engaged in farming on Section 14, Magnolia Township. With
the exception of one year spent in Kansas, Fred passed his entire life from 1845
to 1889 in Rock County, a period of forty-four years. Mr. Barrett was one of
the leading men of the county since the days of his settlement and was
identified with the public interest in various ways. In politics, he was a
Republican, and socially, a member of the A.F. & A.M., Union Lodge, No. 32, of
Evansville. His farm, which was one of the best in the county, comprised 120
acres of land, highly cultivated and improved, and upon it was found a fine
grade of all kind of stock. He was regarded as one of the leading farmers of
the township, and was a progressive, public spirited man. Since 1845, he
participated in the growth and development of the county, saw the broad prairie
land transformed into fertile farms, elegant residences replace the little
cabins, and where once was but a few settlements on a western frontier, he saw
numerous dwellings of a prosperous and intelligent people. Though sharing the
trials and hardships of pioneer life, he lived to see Rock County take a
foremost place in the State, and may have felt proud that he was one of the
factors in bringing about that result (1).
Frederick Barrett was alive in 1915 in Los Angeles, CA.

Barrett, Oliver (b. 1832, d. 29 MAR 1868)
Note: ! HORRIBLE MURDER!
-------------
A MAN STABS HIS OWN BROTHER
THROUGH THE HEART WITH
A BUTCHER KNIFE!!
-----------
One of those horrible tradgedies which makes the blood chill in our veins
transpired yesterday afternoon at Magnolia in this county. Two brothers by the
name of George and Oliver Barrett got into an altercation, when George
deliberately stabbed his brother through the heart with a butcher knife. The
wounded man staggered off a couple of rods and dropped dead.
It appears that the brothers - who are men of families - lived in the same
house, and on Saturday their wives had some difficulty of rather a serious
nature. At the time of the tradegy George went up to his brother who was
nailing some slate over a cellar window to keep the cats out, and asked him if
he intended to allow his wife to abuse his wife (George's). To this Oliver
replied that he did mean to have her defend herself. Upon this George rejoined
that he would settle it, or something to that effect, and immediately plunged
the knife into him.
Another story is that George claims that his brother had an axe which he
intended to stike him with.
The murderer did not make any attempt to escape and was soon after taken into
custody. Both men are between 30 and 40 years of age, and their reputation for
peacefulness of disposition does not rank first rate.
The Sheriff, District Attorney and Coroner went to Magnolia this morning, but
up to the time to press had not returned.

Barrett, Peter Robinson (b. 10 SEP 1833, d. 16 MAR 1891)
Note: !Peter Robinson Barrett was a Methodist. He served in Company B., 8th Wisconsin
Volunteer Infantry. In 1889 he was farming in Magnolia Township. Peter and
Sarah had no children.
OBIT: Peter Robinson Barrett was born in Putnam county, New York, September 10,
1833, he had a twin brother being the sixth and seventh in a family of twelve
children, born to Abijah K. and Lydia Barrett.
He was married on February 9, 1857 in Rock county, Wisconsin to Sarah L.
Soden.
In 1859 he was converted to the Christian religion and joined the Methodist
Church.
When President Lincoln called for 500,000 troops for the defense of
the Union in 1861, Peter Barrett was among the first to respond, enlisting in
Company B of the Eighth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, Col. Robert Murphy, and
was mustered into the service at Camp Randall, Madison, Wisconsin on October
12, 1861 and with the gallant Live Eagle Regiment he served faithfully for four
years, being honorably discharged on September 5, 1865.
Everyone is more or less familiar with the career of the Eighth Wisconsin,
and a mention of such engagements as Fredericktown, New Madrid, Island No. 10,
Farmington, the Siege of Corinth, Iuka, a second Corinth, the seige of
Vicksburg, the Nashville and Red River campaigns and capture of Mobile, reminds
us of the dangers, hardships, defeats and final victories attending those years
which that body of noble men spent in defense of their country's flag.
At the close of the war Mr. Barrett returned to Wisconsin, and in March
1866, he and his wife established for themselves a home at Hanerville, Dane
County, where they lived for twelve years.
In May 1878 they came to Dakota and June 1st settled on the homestead now
known as Burr Oak Farm, about two miles north of Wessington.
Those were indeed pioneer days in this section - then a part of Aurora
County. But occasionally a settler would arrive, and on November 5, 1878, the
post office of Wessington was established with P.R. Barrett as postmaster. In
June 1882, the name of the post office was changed to Elmer, remaining at the
Barrett homestead until November 1883, when Mr. and Mrs. Barrett removed with
the post office to Wessington Springs, and the name was soon afterwards changed
to correspond with that of our town.
Previous to leaving the homestead, Mr. Barrett traded it to D.A. Scott for a
fourth interest in the townsite of Wessington Springs, and thus became a member
of the firm of Burr, Scott, Bourne & Barrett. He remained postmaster from the
establishment of the office until his death, though during the latter years his
gradually declining health had thrown the care and responsibility of the office
upon his faithful wife. He died March 16, 1891 at his home in Wessington
Springs of Bright's disease and ailments contracted during his Army years.
Of the family of eleven brothers and sisters, Ogden, the oldest, in 1891
lived at this place. Clark, the second brother, went to sea when a youth, and
has not been heard from in about forty years. Meliza is dead. Frederick now
lives in California, Oliver is dead. Robinson P., twin brother of Peter R. is
in Milwaukee. Poebe is in Wisconsin. Emily, in California. Irene is dead.
George is in Kansas and Isaiah, the youngest lives in Sioux Falls.
No children have ever been born to Peter and Sarah Barrett, hence by his
death he leaves only a devoted wife and neice - daughter of his twin brother -
as immediate members of his family; yet numerous more distant relatives, scores
of G.A.R. comrades, and friends everywhere sincerely mourn the loss of brother,
comrade, friend - one universally respected, and most highly esteemed; and
confidently may the bereaved widow expect the deepest sympathy and most cordial
support in this, her greatest affliction, from our people among who she has
lived so long, and by whom she is truly beloved.
The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church,
Rev. J.E. Norval officiating, assisted by Revs. Chas. Vessey and J.B. Freeland,
after which E.O.C. Ord Post, G.A.R., and a large concourse of sorrowing friends,
followed the remains to Prospect Hill Cemetery, where all that is earthly of
Peter R. Barrett was laid to rest with touching ceremonies by the Grand Army
comrades.
And thus another veteran answered the last roll call. Life's battle is
ended! Taps! Lights out! All honor to the memory of loyal soldier, patriotic
citizen, kind neighbor, faithful friend!
