Note: !Alonzo Selleck McNeal moved to Ossining at the age of 17 when his father
accepted a position with the prison. He learned the carpenter trade working with
Ebenezer Fowler. He joined the 32nd Regiment of the NY Volunteers on 27 Sep
1862. He mustered out the same day as Private. He was the first member of
Company H. He was transferred to Company A of the 121st NY Infantry as Corporal
on 25 May 1863. He was at Fredericksburgh VA (1st and 2nd battles), Gettysburgh
PA and Rappahanock Station VA. He went through Grant's campaign after
Gettysburgh from the Rapidan River in VA to Petersburgh VA, Winchester VA and
Fishers Hill. Alonzo McNeal was wounded in both feet at Cedar Creek. A letter to
his parents is preserved (?). The 121st was one of the 62 NY regiments in the
Army of the Patomac at Gettysburgh. Of the states represented in the Union Army
there, New York ranked first in losses, with casualties near 7000. Alonzo served
as Chief of Police for many years and later as Police Judge in Sing Sing Village
(now Ossining). He was presented with a carving set at retirement by the
Ossining Police Department. He lived at 70 State Street, Ossining. He was
probably Methodist. Alonzo is buried in Sec K, Lot 38 at Dale Cemetery(1).
